SSD and Medicare Benefits

Most individuals will not get Medicare coverage until 24 months after they are first eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. However, by the time you go through the lengthy application and approval process for SSD, a good portion of this 24 month waiting period will have elapsed. Remember, SSD allows for up to 12 months of retroactive benefits to be paid, dating backwards from your initial filing. This time can count towards your Medicare eligibility.
