Obtaining Medical Benefits

Obtaining Medical Benefits

Learn what medical benefits are available to individuals receiving or waiting for SSD benefits.

Obviously, if you are ill, injured, or disabled, medical care is probably pretty important to you. You may be worried about how you will pay for necessary care.

The good news is, Social Security Disability beneficiaries can get health coverage through Medicare. The bad news is, there is a waiting period.

SSD and Medicare Benefits

Most individuals will not get Medicare coverage until 24 months after they are first eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. However, by the time you go through the lengthy application and approval process for SSD, a good portion of this 24 month waiting period will have elapsed. Remember, SSD allows for up to 12 months of retroactive benefits to be paid, dating backwards from your initial filing. This time can count towards your Medicare eligibility.

Now You May Wonder…

…What Can I Do While I Wait for My SSD Medical Benefits?

If you meet the income requirements, you may qualify for Medicaid while you are waiting for your Social Security Disability benefits to get approved.
